Spawned by the need to protect a seemingly insignificant patch of gravel, not many folks know that Redding’s iconic Sundial Bridge rose as a result of an eco-challenge surmountable only by architect Santiago Calatrava’s sensitive and innovative expertise.

Officials including His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Excellency Mohammad Al Gergawi, Chairman of Dubai Holding, and Mohamed Alabbar, Chairman of Emaar Properties, and representatives from Micael Calatrava, CEO of Calatrava International broke ground this week on ‘The Tower at Dubai Creek Harbor,” Santiago Calatrava’s iconic landmark structure.

Santiago Calatrava has unveiled plans for a pioneering Zurich office building that will include approximately 1,000 underground parking spaces for bicycles, beginning a new chapter of transit-oriented design in the Swiss city.

The contest saw 9 of the world’s most renowned architectural firms submit 11 concepts. Each design was evaluated against specific criteria, including how fully the design expressed the main theme of Expo 2020 “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”.

He has been selected for his “unique vision and ability to transform cities through impactful design" as well as the breadth of his work.

Calatrava’s monumental design, chosen out of six proposals from competing firms, is influenced by the natural forms of the lily and evokes the shape of a minaret, a distinctive architectural feature in Islamic culture.
