IN SHORT
On August 14, 2018, at 11:36 am, the Polcevera viaduct, commonly known as the Morandi Bridge, underwent a partial collapse, causing 43 deaths, 15 injuries and displacing more than 600. This cable-stayed bridge served as the major link between the A10 and A7 motorways in Genoa.
Following this tragedy, Santiago Calatrava proposed various designs for the replacement bridge and associated 1.10 km road link reconstruction.
PONTE CRISTOFORO COLOMBO
This continuous, multi-span, steel box girder viaduct fits naturally within the valley of the River Polcevera, achieving a simple elegance through smooth and harmonious proportions over its full length. The robust bridge piers are inspired by the solidity, tenacity and longevity of a tree, upon whose branches the contiguous 125m long spans are supported.
The simplicity and purity of the design allow for an efficient and cost-effective erection process, with the use of steel for the seven main spans and eight piers providing further advantages through well-established fabrication techniques. The widespread use of steel also facilitates the optimization of the foundations and the associated speed of construction.
The calculated cost of this proposal is € 225.577.079 (€ 241.781.703 including demolition works and the construction of a memorial park)
PORTA MEDITERRANEA
The synergy between the mountains surrounding the River valley and the arch that stands out above the convoluted urban network below, instills a feeling of harmony and balance between the natural landscape and the work of man.
The geometry of the steel arch, due to its intuitive and natural form, makes it possible to span over a great distance by touching the ground at only two points, freeing the Polcevera basin from any constraint and allowing a more harmonious and sustainable future development.
The calculated cost of this proposal is € 283.752.023 (€ 299.980.295 including demolition works and the construction of a memorial park)
PONTE DEI PESCATORI
This cable-stayed bridge is directly symbolic of the maritime city of Genoa. The V-shaped pylons extending above the bridge deck recall the sailor on the trapeze swiftly drawing on the waves with his boat, while the light array of cables across a series of harmonious spans evoke the shrouds that support the mast of a sailing boat.
The constant, slender cross-section of the bridge deck and the adoption of only six main steel piers, improves the construction time and, at the same time, allows a better use of the areas below the bridge.
The calculated cost of this proposal is € 226.598.252 (€ 232.802.876 including demolition works and the construction of a memorial park)
MEMORIALE - PARCO MEMORIALE
The project proposal also includes a memorial designed by Santiago Calatrava in marble and steel located at the base of the pylon placed in the area occupied by the buildings that will be demolished for security reasons.
A memorial park has been designed by Architect Enrico Pinna. It is planned to fill the entire project surface with new planted trees. 43 of the new trees will have at their base 43 different marble bases with the name of each of the victims of the collapse of the Morandi bridge.
