Collserolla Telecommunications Tower_Submition 1988

In 1988, a limited competition was held for a single telecommunications tower to be located on the Tibidabo, one of the Sierra Collserolla Hills that border the old city toward the northern hinterland. This single tower was to have served all interests.
Calatrava’s design called for a circular concrete shaft, 252 meters high and 7 meters in diameter, to carry the cantilevered steel service and equipment platforms (maximum diameter 22 meters). To reduce its impact on the skyline, the structure was to be covered with a blue skin of synthetic material.
This outer skin was a "radomised" polyolitan material, which offered no resistance to the passage of radio waves. It imparted a homogeneous outer appearance to the tower, while permitting maintenance in all weather conditions.
The mast was stabilized by pairs of steel cable stays attached at a height of 91 meters and anchored to the annular base. In this project, all service and administrative facilities were centralized within the base structure.
